At Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, we’re always looking at new technologies and systems that come to the aesthetic market to see if we think they would be a good option for our patients. Our newest system is called Pixel8-RF. It combines microneedling with the delivery of radiofrequency energy to improve skin texture and tone, and to eliminate or reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

What is Pixel8-RF?
The Pixel8-RF system uses bi-polar, RF energy along with minimally invasive microneedles to create effective skin tightening and rejuvenation with little to no downtime. The secret to Pixel8-RF is the combination of the benefits of microneedling and radiofrequency energy delivery.
Other treatments use RF energy for skin tightening, but the energy must be delivered through the epidermis to get into the skin’s second layer, the dermis. To avoid damaging the epidermis, the RF energy needs to be reduced. In Pixel8-RF, the microneedles penetrate the skin at depths from .5 to 3.5mm. This penetrates the epidermis and enters the dermis. When the needles are at depth, the RF energy is released to heat the dermis. By bypassing the epidermis, higher levels of RF energy can be delivered.
Why does this matter? When RF energy enters the dermis it converts to heat. When the body senses heat in the dermis layer, it assumes there has been a wound. It responds by remodeling the existing collagen in the area and then initiating new production of collagen and elastin to heal the perceived wound, although there isn’t actually any wound. This increase in collagen smoothes, firms, and improves skin texture and tone. This is because collagen is the protein in the body responsible for providing the structural framework under our skin. As we age, our collagen production declines every year; this is why our skin begins to sag and develop more lines and wrinkles.
Adjustable options
We like the Pixel8-RF system because it can be adjusted to fit the patient’s unique needs. For microneedling, we can use 25-pin, 49-pin, or 64-pin cartridges depending on the area we’re treating. As mentioned above, the needle depth can be adjusted depending on the location. For instance, forehead skin demands shorter penetration depths than the cheeks. Also, the RF energy delivered can be adjusted depending on the goals of the treatment.
